Majesco lines up E3 roster
Commenting on Majesco’s first-quarter 2007 performance, interim CEO Jesse Sutton stated the publisher would shift the brunt of its focus to Nintendo’s successful Wii and DS systems. True to word, Majesco today revealed its E3 Media and Business Summit lineup, and eight of its nine titles are for Nintendo platforms. For the DS, Majesco will be showing six: Nancy Drew and the Deadly Secret of Olde World Park; Zoo Hospital; Holly Hobbie & Friends; Turn It Around; Operation: Vietnam; and The Wild West. Majesco’s two Wii titles will be Blast Works: Build, Fuse & Destroy and Furu Furu Park. Majesco will also show off the Japanese-developed Kengo: Legend of the 9, which it is publishing in the US later this year.
NCsoft riding four to E3
Undeterred by the imminent junking of its postapocalyptic massively multiplayer online game Auto Assault, NCsoft is revving up plenty of other games to take its place. The South Korea-based publisher revealed today its lineup of MMOGs set to be shown at this year’s E3 Media and Business Summit. Headlining this list is the sci-fi role-playing/shooter mash-up Tabula Rasa, developed in part by industry legend Richard “Lord British” Garriott. NCsoft’s other offerings include the next expansion in its long-running Guild Wars series, Eye of the North; its in-house developed Aion; and its free-to-play, microtransaction-supported Dungeon Runners.
SAN FRANCISCO–With 2009 Game Developers Conference underway, we took the opportunity to take another look at Aion: Tower of Eternity, the upcoming massively multiplayer role-playing game from NCSoft. As you may already know, the game takes place in an offbeat fantasy world where a disaster clove an entire planet in twain, and each half is home to a different race of winged adventurers who blame each other for the mess. What that means for you is that you’ll be able to create a character from the healthy-looking Elyos faction or the demon-like (but not “evil”) Asmodian faction. Your choice will affect which half of the planet you live on and your appearance.
However, since we last saw the game, Aion seems to have incorporated a tremendous amount of new character customization options, including 22 default faces and fully scalable character stature and girth. You can also use a series of sliders to tweak every last feature on your character’s face, and another set of sliders to make your character taller, shorter, fatter, or thinner. For instance, while the game will only have the two playable races to play, you can, if you take the time and effort, create a “dwarf”-like character by giving your character a more-pronounced nose, choosing a long, bushy beard, and making your character’s body shorter and stockier. Or, you can make an “elf”-like character by making a tall, thin character, choosing fine features, and making especially long ears.
We recently had a chance to see the updated content that will appear in Aion: Tower of Eternity at launch. The new updates are part of the “1.5 update,” which has already gone live in the original Asian version of the game (NCSoft plans to keep the Western version of game more or less up-to-date with the Asian game within two months’ worth of updates), and the US team already has an established pipeline to take
content from Asia and translate it into English while also localizing the content for Western audiences by adding many more quests and story-driven details. The US team suggests that about 75% of the content remains the same, but a great deal of content is still added by the localization to make the new stuff more-relatable; for instance, many new “Western-looking” character faces that resemble well-known Western actors have been added. Also, humor is a big part of Aion’s lore (both in the original version and the Western version), but not all jokes translate from culture to culture.
The economies in MMORPGs are fragile, delicate entities that must be balanced properly lest they spiral out of control and end up completely destroying a game’s fun factor. You certainly don’t want a massive influx of in-game currency to just appear out of thin air, as was the recent case with NCsoft’s Aion. A few players logged in to the Azphel server on January 4 to find that they were trillionaires, courtesy of a bug.
To be exact, the players were given nearly 35 trillion Kinah (Aion’s currency). I don’t play Aion (I’m waiting for a free trial) so I’m not exactly sure how the game works, but it looks like the money was erroneously awarded to players for siege warfare via some kind of glitch. According to Massively, Azphel’s auction house went haywire, with item prices skyrocketing as if they had wings of their own.
What does every Daeva need while jetting around Atreia besides a sturdy set of wings? Why, a Daeva’s best friend, of course! And there is certainly quite an assortment of pets to choose from in Aion, from the standard pooch to the very non-standard heavy machinery. Introduced three expansions ago in Assault on Balaurea, pets have become a common sight as you travel about the world, whether you are chillaxing in town or hot on the trail of some XP. Pets are even commonplace in PvP; practically every contestant in the recent PvP tournament had a pet out. That’s because not only are pets fun, but they are functional, too.
Just how many pets are there? Back when I first started this project, I had almost everything together in fairly short order. Then I blinked, and the pet population exploded! And every time I thought I had them all, more would pop up. So chances are NCsoft will throw another one into the mix by the time you read this, but we’ll forge ahead anyhow; it’s time to get this guide out there to help all those who wish to adopt the cute cuddliness of some little critter (just one look in those big puppy/panda/bulldozer eyes, and you know you’re a goner) or even those who just want to know where that pet they just saw comes from. So regardless if whether you’re in the market for one pet or just have the urge to collect them all, welcome to the Aion menagerie.
GameForge has announced that the largest Aion update, v3.0, will officially launch in the EU on August 15th. The update brings two new zones to explore, mounts and player housing into the game.
Fast Mounts & Well-Tended Gardens
Aside from using their wings, Daevas can now additionally use mounts to increase their movement speed and to reach their destination more quickly. And after a nerve-wracking day of adventure, they can return to their own home, which can be decorated and customised to their heart’s content. Furniture can be produced with the new furniture handicrafting skill. The change of the seasons bestows ever-changing, breath-taking panoramas on the housing area.
Aion players will want to check into the game to participate in anniversary-themed events, missions and more. All of the celebration ultimately will lead to October’s massive v3.5 update that will bring a host of new content into the game including new quests, new housing options, new mounts, PvP experiences and much more.
Starting this week, players of NCsoft’s Aion: Ascension will be able to participate in a variety of new thematic missions celebrating Aion’s third anniversary such as Shine On!
